Movember is here!
Putting Men’s Mental Health Front and Centre with The Psychology Group
Movember has arrived, and in New Zealand, it’s not just about sporting a moustache – it’s a wonderful opportunity to shine a light on men’s health issues, particularly mental health, which is an important yet often overlooked part of wellbeing for many men. The statistics from New Zealand highlight how significant this issue is, and The Psychology Group (TPG) is wholeheartedly dedicated to being part of the solution.
Addressing the Mental Health Crisis Among Men in New Zealand
Statistics show that New Zealand men are disproportionately affected by mental health challenges. According to the Mental Health Foundation of New Zealand, men have significantly higher rates of suicide than women, accounting for almost three-quarters of all suicides in the country. In 2021, the Ministry of Health reported a concerning suicide rate of 18.6 per 100,000 men, compared to 6.2 per 100,000 women. Depression, anxiety, and stress are equally pervasive yet often remain undiscussed due to the stigma associated with seeking mental health support (Ministry of Health, 2021).
Research published in the New Zealand Medical Journal highlights the barriers men face in reaching out, from societal pressures to internalised beliefs about masculinity. Men are often expected to be “strong” or “stoic,” which can lead to silence about struggles and difficulties in seeking support (Cleary, 2020). Movember provides an essential reminder that mental health conversations are necessary and that help is available.
Small Steps for Big Change:
Movember aims to shift mindsets, encouraging men to speak up and take action for their mental wellbeing. Small steps, like checking in with a friend or opening up about one's own feelings, can foster a supportive culture and reduce the isolation many men experience. We understand that the path to mental wellness is personal, and we’re here to offer a safe and understanding environment for men of all ages.
With a team of skilled clinicians experienced in addressing unique men’s mental health needs, TPG provides tailored support that respects individual journeys. Whether navigating anxiety, managing stress, or finding healthier ways to cope with life changes, our team is dedicated to fostering resilience and positive change. Evidence-based therapies such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) have shown significant effectiveness in helping men manage mental health challenges, promoting skills that empower individuals to face challenges with confidence and self-compassion.
Building Resilience and Reclaiming Wellbeing
While Movember emphasises peer support, professional guidance can also be transformative. Research shows that therapy helps individuals build resilience, manage difficult emotions, and gain practical tools for navigating life’s challenges (American Psychological Association, 2017). We offer a holistic approach that includes one-on-one therapy, group workshops, and useful resources designed to support men in every aspect of their mental health journey.
Practical Steps to Support Mental Health This Movember
This Movember, we encourage everyone to take steps, big or small, to make mental health a priority:
Reach Out: Sometimes, the best way to support someone is simply by being there. A friendly “how are you?” can start important conversations.
Stay Active: Exercise is known to boost mood and improve mental clarity, making regular physical activity a key aspect of mental wellness.
Cut Back on Alcohol: Alcohol can worsen feelings of anxiety and depression. Limiting intake can lead to clearer thoughts and better mental health.
Seek Support When Needed: Talking to a mental health professional is a powerful way to work through issues and learn new ways of coping. At TPG, we’re here to help.
Movember with TPG: A Healthier Future for Men’s Mental Health
This Movember, let’s work together to change the narrative around men’s mental health. We are here to support men, creating an environment where openness, vulnerability, and strength coexist. We are committed to helping men thrive, and our doors are always open to provide guidance, care, and evidence-based strategies to support each individual’s unique journey.
